When my girls were little, we wrote things we were thankful for on paper leaves and used them to cover a thankful tree. This week I’m sharing a different November tradition. Think of someone whose name might have gone on one of those leaves. What if you told them why?

Original fall thank-you notes and pay-it-forward challenge cards

YOU’VE BEEN THANKED!

You know how neighbors sometimes leave a Halloween treat on the doorstep with a “You’ve been booed!” note? I wanted a Thanksgiving version. “You’ve been turkeyed” didn’t sound quite right (what would you leave on the porch?), but “You’ve been thanked” gave me an idea.

Here’s how to start a gratitude chain. Write a thank-you note to one person and tuck in a little challenge card inviting them to thank someone else. You could hand yours to the crossing guard who greets your kids by name or mail it to the aunt who remembered the school play. Tell them the part you noticed. That’s the part they’ll want to read.

A child writes a thank-you note to Grandma about making pancakes, with a pencil drawing of pancakes below.

LIFE MADE EASIER

When your child gets stuck after “Dear Grandma”

Try asking, “What do you wish you could do with Grandma again tomorrow?” If the answer is “make pancakes in our pajamas,” you’ve got the makings of a pretty good note.

Younger kids can draw the pancakes and tell you what to write underneath. Use their exact words if you can. Grandma will recognize who’s talking!

Kids Gratitude Chain Thank-You Cards

I made four new thank-you card designs for kids. They can pick sunshine, flowers, superheroes, or space, then choose a lined card for writing or a blank one with room for a picture. Each design comes with a matching challenge card to tuck in the envelope.

If a note makes its way to someone’s doorstep this week, hit reply and tell me who you picked. I’d love to hear!
